The Urban Farmer

We've harvested over 18 lb of heirloom tomatoes since August 6, and the local wildlife have had their share as well. Many thanks to our friends who helped with the watering.

I just figured out how to make twice as many people happy - small tarts!

Half the calories of the original, so much less guilt if you eat two.

The Urban Farmer

On March 17, I planted a bunch of heirloom tomato seeds, saved from produce purchased near Port Burwell a couple of years ago. Somehow, I ended up with 135 seedlings! The neighbours have been very accommodating; a large number of plants have been farmed out, leaving us with 64 in pots of varying size.

The first blossoms appeared on an orange banana, and a green zebra was the next to flower.

Looking forward to the harvest!

The Eviction: Mama and her 3 kits thought they could hang out in the small space between our garage roof and the deck -- Bye!

With a little encouragement from R and the garden hose, off they went: down the Saskatoon berry trees, over the rhubarb, through the garlic, and around the lilac. Last seen sneaking through the back fence, in a bit of a huff.

It was a perfect day for a walk to High Park. We were thinking about going to Bloor West Village, but decided to linger in the park instead. And yes, Grenadier Pond is an eight and a half mile round trip. With the daytime high exceeding 9° C, who wouldn’t want to stay outside all afternoon?

Marmalade

It’s that time of year again – the Seville oranges are in the stores.

Recipes for “orange glow” posted below.

Mum's Marmalade - Crockpot Method

2 lb Seville oranges

2 lemons

2 pints (40 fl oz) boiling water

4 lb sugar

Cut washed oranges and lemons in half. Remove and retain pips, but discard any that have been cut, because they would make your marmalade taste bitter....

In Focus

Posted by Zena Curwain on Sunday, November 13, 2011,

Once I've framed my shot, one of the main challenges for me is getting it focused in a way that captures the image that I want. My camera has an excellent lens, and all kinds of technical wizardry inside, but sometimes I really need to override the automatic focus. This entails taking the camera out of intelligent auto mode and having a really hard think. After fiddling around with the settings as well as the micro-dot that functions as a joy-stick, I have managed to produce this one dec...

Timing

Posted by Zena Curwain on Sunday, November 13, 2011,

As much as anything else, photography is about timing. You can be as much of a technical whizz as you like, but your expertise isn't going to be of much use to you if you've left your camera at home.

These images may not be great photographs, but they demonstrate that there's no substitute for just being there.

This Highland Cattle calf was born earlier that day at High Park Zoo.
